A new look.

Well, what do you think? I felt that it was time to give the old Maggot Sandwich a fresh look and feel; accordingly I spent much of Saturday night experimenting with various new layouts and colour schemes until I came up with what you see before you now. Please leave a comment and let me know what you like / dislike about the new look - you never know, I might even take your advice!

The photo above was taken by me last week in Erith Riverside Gardens - the place is not all bad you can see. Click for a larger version. You can view all of my photos online here.

I see from the BBC News Website that tea is now officially good for you; something that many of us Brits have been telling the world for years; you can read more here.

When I was a kid I used to love playing the card game Top Trumps - well, one enterprising individual has gone one step further and created Plop Trumps. Delightful. Click on the link to read more; I just do this so you don't have to.

I know that I have been banging on for what seems like forever about the ills that are bestowed by mobile telephones; I have now come to the conclusion that if I had any influence at all over the powers that be, I would make mobiles only available under a licencing scheme, as there used to be for handguns, until the 1997 total UK handgun ban. Applicants for a mobile phone licence would have to present a solid business case (a doctor / fire fighter on call etc.) and the licence would be reviewed yearly - as soon as the phone could no linger be justified for real practical use, the licence would be revoked and the telephone deactivated. I have been reading the results of a clinical report stating that reported incidents of brain cancer have risen by a little over 25% in the last twenty years. This may be a coincidence, but the widespread use of mobiles in this period should make people sit up and think.

WNKR have been feeding their transmitter spinach over the last couple of weeks, and their signal on 1476 KHz medium wave is now covering a much larger area; do give them a try.

Colin and I gave a talk to BRATS amateur radio club about life working for Radio Caroline on Thursday night. We went down to visit them in Rainham, Kent and were met by a very friendly group of people who were very interested in our stories of sea borne derring do. The club meets in a local community hall which also houses a bar that has Shepherd Neame Spitfire real ale on draught, so I for one was an extremely happy person. Here is a somewhat short and potted video history of the radio station, and if you look very carefully, during the last minute or so of the footage, you will see me on board the Ross Revenge, on deck, leaning over the side to talk to a passing boat (look for the bits of the ship with the rainbow funnel). Lots of people think I painted the funnel in a rainbow pattern to show hippy solidarity - the real reason was that there was not enough paint left in any one colour, so I made a rainbow to make the paint stretch out.

  1. Monsieur Pewty,

I’m surprised that you of all people should descend into un-validated Daily Mail-esque pseudo-science with your rant on phones. I know I’m preaching (sorry Rev) to the converted to remind you that a vague correlation does not imply causality.

I point you to the following links showing how the decreasing in pirates has directly caused global warming.
